Why would a blind man go to see an exotic dancer? Poetic, mythic, and brave, Indo-Canadian Anosh Irani’s multiple Dora Award-winning and Canadian Governor General nominated play Bombay Black is a searing play set in the bitter reality of India. Funny, violent, humane, and directed by Mumbai-born, Jessie Richardson Theatre Award and Vancouver Fringe Festival Award winning producer, Rohit Chokhani. Bombay Black took the Vancouver Fringe by storm in 2017 and had a sold out run. After strong critical reviews it was voted amongst the top 20 shows on Vancouver stages by the Georgia Straight and was also awarded the Public Market Pick of the Fringe Award.  It was remounted for a three-city wide four-week regional run in the province of BC in 2018.
The lives of an exotic dancer and her embittered mother are altered when a blind stranger visits them. Set in present-day India, Bombay Black is a powerful story of story of Apsara, who lives in Bombay with her mother, making a living by selling exotic dances to wealthy men. When a blind man named Kamal arrives for an appointment, the complex and brutal past of the three characters slowly rises to the surface. Featuring a remarkable poetic text, bold theatrical imagery, a combination of contemporary Bombay bar dancing, and exaggerated lighting complemented with an evocative score, Bombay Black is challenging work by one of Canada’s leading playwriting voices.
